Oil on Canvas
120cm x 100cm
October 1996
This piece at the time was a major undertaking. I had never used
oil paints on a large scale before, and I had never done a large
scale painting. I made the sketch of my hand first, and decided to
create this large piece to enter my portfolio. I am also disappointed
with the outcome of this piece. The background focal point is
hidden behind the hand, which is very out of proportion. The fourth
finger appears too large, and the base of the thumb is too thick.
The shadows are not well done, and could also have more contrast.
I do however like the appearance of the nail. The dents imply
multiple hits, increasing the feeling of torture as the nail is
driven. Overall, an ok piece of work.
